Much has been made lately as to what constitutes patriotism. Many feel that displaying the American flag shows your love of your country while others feel that speaking out against wrongdoings by our government shows true patriotism. Both are right, but what are some other ways we can all show that we love our country and what it stands for? Here are five ways anyone can exhibit patriotism.
- Support our Veterans
From a simple word of kindness to donating to veterans assistance programs, there are many ways we can show our men and women who lay their lives on the line for us that we appreciate their sacrifice. Also, consider visiting a veteran’s hospital or volunteering at a veteran’s cemetery. Whether your gesture is small or large, the sincerity will shine through.
- Celebrate the 4th of July
No country has quite the level of celebration over its independence like the good ol’ US of A. From picnics to baseball to backyard games, we take this day to not only remember those who gave us this freedom but we also commemorate them by engaging in activities that this freedom makes possible. And what better way to celebrate than with franks, friends, family, and fireworks?
- Get Involved
Whether taking part in your homeowner’s association or your local government, being a part of the process that makes this country run is a great way to show your love of your country. Not only will your voice be heard but the voices of those who support you will also be heard.
- Learn the National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance— and Recite Them
Certain public figures aside, showing pride in your country despite your grievances with certain aspects of it not only shows that you are proud of where you’re from but it also shows that you are mature enough to see the big picture rather than just a few pixels on the screen.
- Celebrate Memorial Day
While many see this day as a great day to go to the beach, the meaning behind it is far more somber and less celebratory. Created as a way to honor all those who have given their lives for our country, sadly it has evolved (or devolved?) into an annual beer commercial and the “unofficial” start to summer. While having fun and enjoying friends and family on this day is precisely the reason each and every person who gave all for our country did just that, we should all take at least a few minutes to pay our respects. It’s the least we can do in this country that gives us so much.
There are many ways to show others that you love your country. Flying flags and displaying bumper stickers is a nice start but with a little extra effort, you can both display your pride and have fun doing it.
